How to Install and Start Windows Media Center on Windows 10 PC

If you’ve just updated your system to Windows 10 and are looking for Windows Media Center in it, then you’re wasting your time. Microsoft has removed the Media Center completely from Windows 10. Maybe a few of you have known this already. Microsoft has not provided any means to get it on Windows 10. If you want to use Windows Media Center on your Windows 10 PC as well, then you’ll have to go through an unofficial method. The procedure is not so tricky, but as it’s not an official way, you may encounter some problems while running it on your Windows 10 PC.



How to download the Windows Media Center’s installer file on Windows 10

As there is no official method to get Media Center in Windows 10 OS, you’ll need to download an installer file from a third party website.
  1. First of all, check the processor of your system. If you do not know how to check it, right-click on ‘This PC’ icon on your desktop and then click ‘Properties’ in the context menu.
  2. Note down the ‘System Type’ in your mind.
  3. Now, open a browser.
  4. Download the Windows Media Player installer file.
  5. Now, click on the red color ‘Download’ button to start downloading the installer file.
  6. Allow the Windows Media Center installer to download it to your PC.
  7. Choose a folder to save the file and click ‘Save’ when prompted. If you’re not prompted to do so, then by default it will be saved to a preset location, which would be the ‘Downloads’ folder.
Once the installer is downloaded to your Windows 10 computer, now you’ll need to run it to install the Windows Media Center. For which, you can take help from the below instructions.

This would not be difficult for you if you have extracted and installed the third party program from a zip file earlier. The same thing you’ll need to do here to install the Windows Media Center. Do not worry if this is new for you; just follow these instructions.
  1. Look for the ‘Folder’ icon in your taskbar and click on it to open the File Explorer window. You’ll find it in between the Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Store icon in the taskbar.
  2. Now, locate the file where Media Center installer has downloaded to your device.
  3. Find the installer file and right-click on it.
  4. Now, click on ‘Extract Here’ option in the context menu. You may find it under the submenu of your Zip file extractor. If you don’t have a Zip file extractor installed on your device, then you’ll need to download it.
  5. Under the Media Center installer’s extracted files, find a file with the name ‘_TestRights.cmd’ and right-click it.
  6. Then click on ‘Run as administrator’ in the context menu.
  7. Allow the file to install by providing the essential authentication when prompted.
  8. If this opens another command prompt window, then click ‘X’ to close it.
  9. Repeat the steps to run the file, if nothing opens.
  10. After trying multiple times no command prompt window open, then restart your Windows 10 PC and then try again.
  11. When the installation process, wait for it to finish.
  12. Wait until “Press any key to exit” message doesn’t appear on the screen.
  13. Press any key to close and finish.
Now, your Windows 10 PC also has Windows Media Center like other Windows versions.
