How to Get Contacts from an Excel Sheet to your Android Device

Save the Excel sheet into CSV format

The main reason behind saving the document into CSV format is that it can be easily converted into vCard. You can create a new sheet for the contacts you want to import in your Android device. While making a contact sheet, use A1 cell for First name, B1 for Last name, C1 for the phone number, and D1 for email. And, make sure to save the document into CSV file format. If you already have a contact sheet, then check that the file has .csv extension in its name. In case, you’re unable to identify the document format, open it into the Excel application and from the ‘Save As’ menu, choose CSV type and click ‘Save.’ The contact sheet is now ready to convert into vCard file.

Convert Contact sheet (.csv file) into vCard

Although various online and offline tools can convert the files for free. But, you don’t need to use any of these tools, just use your Google Contact. It is one of the best and most convenient ways to get contacts from an Excel sheet to your Android device. Here is how.

1. Visit, “https://contacts.google.com/” with any web browser of your system. If your Google account is opened in the browser, then it will load your contacts page. If you haven’t used your Google account for a single time in the browser, then you’ll see the sign screen. Enter the information asked on the page to access your Google contacts.

2. Now, click on the ‘More’ button on the left-hand side menu. This will open several more options below it.

3. Click on ‘Import’ underneath the ‘More’ button. Import contacts dialog will open on the screen.

4. When asked to choose the file type to import, select ‘CSV or vCard file.’

5. Now, click on ‘Select file’ button in the Import contacts dialog.

6. Browse the contact sheet you’ve saved in CSV format and select it.

7. Then click on the ‘Import’ button.

Doing so uploads the Excel sheet to your Google account. And, the contacts from the sheet will be added to your Google Contacts. Moreover, the contacts added to your Google Contacts will sync to all devices you’re signed in with the same account, including your Android Smartphone or tablet. If you’re not, then sign in to your Google account to get contacts in your Android Contact app. This way, you’ve bypassed the two more steps, creating vCard file and importing to your Android device.

The contacts added through syncing will not be added automatically to your Android device storage. If you want to store them to your hard drive too, then you’ll have to complete both steps you’ve skipped.

Exporting vCard file from Google Contacts

1. Click the contact file you’ve imported to your Google account.

2. Then select ‘Export.’ Clicking it opens the Export contacts dialog on the screen.

3. Choose ‘vCard’ under the “Export as” heading.

4. And click ‘Export.’

Now, the vCard file of the Excel contact sheet will download to your computer storage. After the vCard file downloads, you can transfer it through your Google Drive or any other way to your Android or iOS device for importing contacts to your Contact app.
